Over 30 Tibetans held in Himachal to prevent Olympics run disruption

Over 30 Tibetans have been detained in Himachal Pradesh to prevent them from crossing the international border to disrupt the Olympics torch run in Tibet, a police official said Saturday.

During the past few days, the police have rounded up over 30 Tibetans from Shimla and Kinnaur districts, Ashwani Kumar, director-general of police, told IANS Saturday.

He said that the police would ensure that no Tibetan would be allowed to violate the law or hold any demonstration near the border.

Most of the Tibetans who were rounded up were without proper documents required for entering prohibited areas in Kinnaur district. A special permission from the district administration is necessary, especially for foreigners, for entering certain areas located near the international border.

During questioning, the Tibetans allegedly confessed to the police that they wanted to enter Tibet in order to disrupt the Olympic torch run.
