Wipro joins global consortium for green energy

To mark World Environment Day, Software major Wipro Ltd joined Green Grid, the global consortium dedicated to energy efficiency in data centres and business computing eco-systems, the IT bellwether said here Thursday.

As a Green Grid member, Wipro will broaden its green IT initiatives to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies for improving the energy efficiency of its data centres and business computing, the company said in a statement.

The green initiatives of Wipro's global IT services extend from energy data centres to eco-friendly product engineering designs and PC ranges.

'The data centres provide end-to-end services to our enterprise customers for better capacity utilisation and enable them to minimise energy consumption, cooling and housing equipment, which cause greenhouse gases. Server virtualisation at the centres minimises the use of equipment for operations,' Wipro Technologies chief marketing officer Jessie Paul said.

Wipro acquired last year the US-based Infocrossing data centre computing firm, which has helped it further the cause of ecological sustainability.

Wipro also went Carbon Neutral at Mandala, its annual customer forum event, and plans to extend the initiative to more customer events. Other recent accomplishments include receiving US Green Building Council Certification for two of the company's facilities, the statement added.
