The toll in the floods in West Bengal went up to 46 as many parts of the state still remained inundated Thursday.
More than 300,000 people are still in relief camps, mainly in East Midnapore district, state Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta told reporters after a high-level meeting at the state secretariat here.
Vast tracts of Patashpur, Sabong, Pingla and Bhagabanpur blocks in East Midnapore district were still inundated, but the situation was normalising in the West Midnapore district, which also bore the brunt of the recent flood fury, officials said.
The state government has increased the flood relief grant to Rs.570 million, Dasgupta said.
Meanwhile, Relief Minister Mortaza Hossain and Civil Defence Minister Srikumar Mukherjee went to the Raj Bhavan Thursday and briefed Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi on the situation and the steps taken by the government to provide relief to the people.
